102 Dalmatians (2000)

102 Dalmatians premiered on November 13, 2000, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York. Released in theaters on November 22, 2000. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and distributed by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. It is the sequel to the 1996 Walt Disney Pictures film 101 Dalmatians, which was a live-action remake of the 1961 animated feature film of the same name. Based upon the 1956 novel “The One Hundred and One Dalmatians” by Dodie Smith.

Cruella de Vil is released from prison, seemingly cured of her puppy-napping ways. However, the sound of Big Ben triggers her old obsession, sending her back into a scheme to capture more Dalmatian puppies for an extravagant fur coat. Dog-loving parole officer Chloe Simon and her Dalmatians, along with the clever Oddball, the only puppy without spots, team up to stop her.

The soundtrack for the film was released on  November 7, 2000. Songs included on the soundtrack and credited in the film were “Digga Digga Dog,” written by Pamela Phillips Oland, Mark Brymer, George Clinton, Jr., Garry M. Shider, and David L. Spradley, performed by Oren Waters; “Cruella De Vil 2000,” lyrics by Jack Feldman, music by Mel Leven, performed by Camara Kambon featuring Mark Campbell; “So Fabulous, So Fierce (Freak Out),” written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, performed by Thunderpuss featuring Jocelyn Enriquez; “Bella Notte (This is the Night),” written by Francis Burke and Peggy Lee, performed by George Givot and Billy Thompson; “Whatcha Gonna Do (With Your Second Chance),” written by Steve Diamond and Paul Vann, performed by Nobody’s Angel.

At the 73rd Academy Awards on March 25, 2001, 102 Dalmatians and Anthony Powell were nominated in the Costume Design category.

Released on home video for the first time on VHS and DVD on April 3, 2001. It was re-released on DVD on September 16, 2008. 102 Dalmatians is available on Disney+.

My Thoughts
This is my first time watching 102 Dalmatians. Glenn Close's performance as Cruella de Vil is the highlight of the film. The family-friendly humor, physical comedy, goofy villains, and adorable puppies are perfect for kids. With the humor aimed at kids, though, I think it can be less appealing to adults. The story is predictable, and I would have liked a little more backstory on some of the other characters.
