In One Magic Christmas, Ginny Grainger is a hardworking mother struggling to keep her family afloat during a difficult holiday season. Feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from the joy of Christmas, she’s lost sight of the magic her children still believe in. When a gentle Christmas angel named Gideon is sent to watch over the family, small moments of wonder begin to unfold. Through unexpected encounters and quiet acts of kindness, Ginny slowly discovers there may still be room for hope, gratitude, and a little Christmas magic in her life.

My Thoughts
This was my first time watching One Magic Christmas. It has all the ingredients for a truly great Christmas movie. You have a small town, winter and snow, family struggles, and in the end, a magical transformation for the main character. It tackles many meaningful topics such as hope, financial struggles, family, and rediscovering lost Christmas spirit. So why doesn’t it work? It is a very dark and heavy movie at times, with a bank robbery, death, kidnapping, just to name a few of the more intense moments, and the balance between that realism and the fantasy of a Christmas angel, Santa Claus, and the North Pole just doesn’t seem to mesh. I thought Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton were good as Ginny Grainger and the Christmas angel Gideon. Although I think Steenbergen’s reaction to her husband’s death and the kidnapping of her children was lacking a little in the emotion department, it just didn’t feel emotional enough, although an argument could be made that people deal with grief differently, and at times, Stanton’s character, Gideon, seemed a little creepy and maybe a little stalkerish? The movie seemed to move fairly slowly through most of it before an ending that you would expect from a Disney Christmas movie. My overall rating for One Magic Christmas is 57.00 (out of 100).
