Caution: Possible Spoilers Ahead!
In 19th-century Norway, Haakon Haakonsen signs on as a cabin boy aboard a British merchant ship to support his injured father. Under the guidance of seasoned sailor Jens, he slowly adapts to life at sea.
A man posing as a British naval officer, Lieutenant Howell, secretly turns out to be the pirate John Merrick in disguise. After poisoning the captain and taking control of the ship, Merrick’s scheme is interrupted by a violent storm that wrecks the vessel.
Haakon and a young stowaway named Mary wash ashore on a deserted island. Discovering that Merrick hid treasure aboard the ship, Haakon prepares for the pirates’ return by setting traps and learning to survive in the wild.
When Merrick and his crew arrive to reclaim their loot, Haakon and his allies outsmart them in a final confrontation. The pirates are defeated, and Haakon returns home to Norway, having proven his courage and maturity.
First released on home media (VHS) on July 17, 1991. First released on DVD in September 2005, in the Disney Movie Club series. Shipwrecked is available on Disney+ as of March 1, 2026.
CAST & CREW
Shipwrecked had the potential of a classic Disney adventure, it ultimately fell short of that goal. The premise, with pirates, treasure, and survival on a deserted island, sounds thrilling, the execution of it fell flat. Though the scenery is impressive and the villain has moments of menace, the film feels smaller and less engaging than other Disney live-action adventures of its era, making it more forgettable than fun.
