A nature documentary set in Kenya’s Maasai Mara that follows the lives of lions and cheetahs as they navigate survival, family dynamics, and territorial conflict in the African savanna. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the film blends real wildlife footage with a story-driven approach. The film interweaves two primary storylines: a lion pride led by the aging male Fang and a solitary cheetah mother named Sita raising her cubs. As environmental pressures and rival predators threaten both families, each must adapt to survive in a constantly changing landscape.
Mara, a young lion cub, grows up under the protection of her mother, Layla, in Fang’s pride. When a rival lion, Kali, invades and defeats Fang, the pride is thrown into chaos. Separated from her family, Mara is forced to mature quickly, learning to survive and eventually reclaim her place within the pride.
Sita raises her cubs alone, teaching them how to hunt and avoid predators. Facing constant danger from lions and other threats, not all of her cubs survive. The remaining cubs grow stronger under her guidance and eventually leave to live independently, marking the end of her role as a mother.
The film highlights the harsh realities of the savanna—territorial battles, predation, and environmental challenges. The struggle between Fang and Kali represents the constant fight for dominance, while Sita’s journey emphasizes the difficulty of raising young in the wild.
The theme song for African Cats, “The World I Knew,” was written by Ryan Tedder and Dean Josiah Cover (professionally known as Inflo) and performed by Jordin Sparks.
