Encyclopedia Entry | Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

This entry highlights the film’s overview, plot summary, quick facts, and cast & crew. My upcoming book
Disney Movie and Film Encyclopedia - Vol. 1: Walt Disney Animation Studios will include sections on production history, creative development, theatrical releases and rereleases, critical reception, box office performance, music, home media, awards & honors, historical significance, and lasting cultural impact.

Premiering on December 21, 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs marked the beginning of a new era in filmmaking as the first full-length cel animated feature produced in the United States. Directed by David Hand under the supervision of Walt Disney, the film was adapted from The Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Snow White” first published in 1812. At a time when animation was confined to short subjects shown before feature films, Walt Disney envisioned a feature-length animated story capable of delivering the same emotional depth and cinematic spectacle as live-action films. Although many in Hollywood dismissed the project as “Disney’s Folly,” the finished film proved that animation could captivate audiences for more than eighty minutes while blending drama, comedy, romance, fantasy, suspense, and music into a single unforgettable experience.
